What does luxury mean to you? For me, luxury is living in a house near a beautiful beach, driving my dream car, eating delicious food every day, and being able to travel whenever I want. It sounds very expensive, doesn’t it? I believe nothing is wrong with that. But if I can’t achieve them, will I not ever be able to enjoy luxury? No, I don’t think so. Throughout my life, I have learned that luxury is more accessible than you might think. Of course, I hope to achieve those things I just said someday, but they are not the only luxury I can experience. It is easy to forget, but luxury is always around us.
Splurging doesn’t necessarily mean Luxury
Sometimes it costs money for luxury, but spending a lot of money does not necessarily mean that you will experience luxury. For example, have you ever spent a lot of money on clothing but ended up not wearing it because it didn’t feel comfortable? Or have you been to a fancy dinner and somehow felt you were missing out because you didn’t enjoy that much?
There are so many times I’ve splurged but felt empty instead of luxurious. Yes, just because you splurge doesn’t mean you can afford the luxury. Of course, there may be a sense of satisfaction in the fact that you spent money to have an extraordinary experience. However, that sense of satisfaction does not necessarily mean that you will be able to experience luxury.
What, then, does “luxury is always around us” mean?
Luxury is something that your mind decides for you. It doesn’t matter how much money you spend or how little or no money you spend. If your heart feels luxury, it is luxury. You should not let anyone, magazines, tv shows, or social media, tell you otherwise.
Examples of luxury around us
During when a lot of places were closed because of the pandemic and we couldn’t or shouldn’t go anywhere, people got most creative about experiencing luxury.
-
- Families camped out in their backyards
- Parents cooked full courses for their kids
- People dressed up to take out the trash.
As for me and my husband, grocery shopping once a week was the most luxurious moment. It was also a date day for us. So I would dress nicer, put on pretty makeup, and went out shopping. We enjoyed the normal shopping to the fullest.
These days, we enjoy picnics. We just take our lunch to a nearby park, a field, or even common area in our apartment complex, and eat it, but eating under the sun is exceptionally delicious and we feel luxurious.
If we are aware of it, luxury abounds in our daily lives.
How to find luxury around you
So, how can you find luxury? Here are a couple of tips I recommend trying.
1. Find out what you really enjoy and the ways to enjoy it.
What do you enjoy? Eating good food? Is going to a fancy restaurant the only option? Why not try cooking yourself? The sense of accomplishment that comes from preparing your own favorite meal may make you feel twice as luxurious. Or eat your food on your balcony or the park near you to experience something different than usual, with which you may feel luxurious.
Do you want to relax at a resort? Does your apartment complex or community have a pool? You could bring your stuff and relax at the pool deck. If the weather is nice, that’s the ultimate luxury, isn’t it? Is there a park, forest, lake, or beach near you? Pack some wine and have a picnic there. If you could see yourself enjoying the occasion, that is luxury.
2. Stop and see how far you’ve come in your life.
At first glance, it might not have anything to do with luxury, but stop and see how far you’ve come in your life. What you are doing or experiencing as a matter of course now may have seemed a luxury 10 years ago. For example, how’s your living situation? Did you move out of your parents’ house? Are you living alone without roommates? Are you living in a bigger apartment or house? Stop for a moment and soak in and feel what a luxurious life you are living compared to 10 years ago.
Find your own luxury
As mentioned above, if your heart decides what you are experiencing is luxury, it is luxury. The world is full of information, and before we know it, we may have the world’s definition of “luxury” imprinted in our minds. Of course, that’s not wrong, either. However, if we can’t experience it, will we never be able to feel luxurious? No, that is not true. Luxury is always around us. It is up to you whether you find it or not.
